Three days AFTER my husband died unexpectedly in his sleep...he told me why. It was shocking, undeniably true, and the greatest gift he could have ever given.
The Gift Giver edition by Jennifer Hawkins Religion Spirituality eBooks
It's a quick and fun read. Sad, but inspriing too. Not sure I can say it's great though. I had high hopes for this book at first, but then her story just started to feel not authentic. I had emphathy for Jennifer Hawkins...how tragic to lose your husband as she did, and to be faced with raising to young children on your own. But as the story progressed, I didn't like her as much as I wanted to. And I wasn't sure anyone's husband could be as perfect as her Mark was in this story. And the chain of events and the things her dead husband said to her just seemed to fall into place too perfectly to be real. But... if you are interested in this kind of story, it's worth trying out...I'm drawn to these stories of connecting with lost loved ones...but I'm also a cynic...not sure what I believe and what I don't. You might feel very differently that I did after reading it.Product details

The Gift Giver edition by Jennifer Hawkins Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Imagine going to sleep one evening lying next to the person you love, excited about life and full of hope for the future. You wake up the next morning listening to the sweet sound of your child singing in his room, and then suddenly, inexplicably and without warning, you discover that your loving spouse and parent of your two precious young children has DIED in his sleep. In one sudden moment - GONE...forever. The Gift Giver is the true story of author Jennifer Hawkins and her journey through grief, despair, anger and ultimately acceptance, healing and renewal.
Shortly after the death of her husband, in her anger and pain, Jennifer screams out in her mind "Why? Why? Why?". To her surprise, comes a response from the voice of her husband Mark, shortly followed with a six word explanation as to why he has passed on. The explanation is shocking, and what follows is a series of communications, events and circumstances that can only be described as too compelling to ignore.
As with any transcendent and supernatural experience, there are bound to be a wide range of reactions from the reader. What Ms. Hawkins manages to do is share with such honesty and vulnerability that irrespective of one's beliefs - her story WILL get you thinking. I personally believe that to the extent people are in our lives, they become part of our very fabric and being - both consciously and subconsciously. To the extent that they've influenced us, they continue to live on within us. In the case of Ms. Hawkins, her husband Mark was, and in a different spectrum still is - the love of her life. The relationship and connection is powerful.
Irrespective of what you believe, the real value of this story is in the sharing of such an emotional and intimate experience. The author holds nothing back. Ms. Hawkins finds her way through the unimaginable and comes out the other side with acceptance, a new perspective on life and the beginnings of a bright future for herself and her two children. She demonstrates in a multitude of ways that life truly does go on.
The Gift Giver is a memoir and tribute woven together through a series of simple yet profound and potentially life changing insights. It is clearly a labor of love and a GIFT in itself to those who would choose to read it; whether they have suffered a similar personal tragedy or hope to learn something from her story.
I started reading the excerpt on line on Am and it was like waiting for next weeks episode. Yes, I'm old fashioned & still like the feel of a book in my hand and chose to have the autographed copy of the book after I was so intrigued. When my book arrived, I read it cover to cover without putting it down.
I am a believer. But even if you are a skeptic, this is an excellent book on how Jennifer dealt with the loss of her husband, while raising two young sons. I have studied about death and dying since starting nursing school 34 years ago. As a RN, death is a part of my every day life, but that never makes easier or has conditioned or hardened me not feel emotions, even with the loss of patients. I appreciate the courage Jennifer has shown by choosing to share her very intimate story of love, loss, and the struggles between to find her way back to healing. Love, Love, Love this book!
I was deeply touched by Jennifer Hawkins story of love, loss, and triumph. Though her story is full of difficult emotions she openly reveals, and is very sad at the core event, "The Gift Giver" is ultimately an encouraging story of enduring love.
Sometimes our lives may feel chaotic and impossible to understand...especially when it involves losing someone we love. But Jennifer's book gives us real hope and confirmation that love never dies and there is a reason for everything.
I have passed this book around through my family and friends, and recommend it to everyone. Those with an open heart will immediately connect..but it may be an even more important book to read for someone that has little faith or hope of a Higher Power and life beyond our human existence...through Jennifer's accounting of her real life experience, her book gives the gift of hope and transformation through everlasting love.
